Nothing says Gracious Hostess like something homemade and today Momma’s Makin Soap! This method that I’ve used is the melt and pour version so come along on this journey with me to see how truly easy it is to create something so common but with a unique twist.
Being a Savannah native and a fan of Broughton Street, I used to frequent stores like Nourish and Paris Market to see, touch and smell all the goodies that had the '‘Homemade” look. To me that look meant you took time and carefully prepared something with your own hands. This project was inspired by all those memories. Now lets do this!
In true lazy girl fashion, I used Amazon Prime to order and quickly get my hands on all the tools needed for the project. Each day when a package arrived, I would yell “Momma’s Makin Soap! Y’all gone be jealous just wait!” Naturally my household of guys grew weary of this daily proclamation.
Here’s what you need:
Soap Base
Essential Oils for Fragrance
Colorant
Pitcher and/or microwave safe container
Soap Mold
Herbs/Flowers {optional}
Step 1. You will need to come up with what type of soap you want to make. The fragrance, look of it, etc. Once you have that in mind gather all the necessary tools. Today I decided on Lavender Lemon.
Step 2. Cut the soap base into the small cubes for an easier melting process. Place them in the microwave safe container and heat at 30 second intervals until completely melted. Please be sure to stir in between intervals.
Step 3. Once melted, pour the liquid into the large pitcher, add your desired fragrance and stir. I added several drops of Lavender and Lemon essential oils until the scent was to my liking.
Step 4. Add your colorant. I added about 4 drops of a violet color to gain the soft lavender shade.
Step 5. Pour your mixture into the soap mold.
Step 6. Once the mixture is poured, put some standard rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle and spray the top layer to get rid of the bubbles.
Step 7. Add the embellishments of your choice to the top layer. I added dried lavender for that chic homemade look.
Step 8. You must let the soap sit overnight to be sure it is solid enough for cutting, then remove the loaf from the mold and cut to your desired size.
Voila! Momma Made Soap!!!! This was such a fun project and would add that personal touch to any gift. My boys were amazed that I actually did it and I have to admit, so was I.
